Matt, why do Brits use the word "bum" to describe their own rectums? Why don't they use the word "ass", like every other civilized people in the English-speaking world?

It is right, proper, and more polite.

Languages that are geographically separated quickly develop their own slang because of the difference in speakers. The word “bum” itself probably comes from the sound of a fart.

The important thing is that anyone, on either side of the Atlantic, can still describe Matt as a bum and be correct.
