On 13 October 1972, a chartered flight carrying 45 people – including a rugby team, their friends and family – crashed in the Andes, in an incident known as the Andes flight disaster.
More than a quarter of the passengers died when Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed, and several others died soon afterwards from cold and injury.
A few days afterwards, an avalanche swept over the survivor’s shelter, killing 8 of the 27 remaining.
The final 16 were discovered 72 days later, on 23rd December.
They had faced little food, no source of heat and radio news reports that the search for them had been abandoned.
Faced with starvation, the survivors fed on the bodies of dead passengers that had been preserved in the snow, and this was without benefit of plastic rice.
