Topic: Spectrum really is pissing me off.

??? !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 8 years ago #74,172

Now my internet constantly drops every 25 seconds of so at all hours of the day. I tried to convince my brother to call them, since it's under his name leaving me unable to do shit on my own, but he's just a lazy ass that would much rather blame the government for repealing net neutrality thinking this gave Spectrum the right to throttle our internet connection even though if they were doing just that they would have been doing it for the past couple of fucking years since this issue didn't just happen overnight. Sometimes I wish it wasn't YouTube that had a shooter, Spectrum deserves it more.

buy your own fucking internet, then. It seems to work fine for your brother, which makes me think he is fucking over your connection and it has nothing to do with the ISP.

The router or modem is likely shitting out. I'd recommend the T-Mobile WiFi cellspot that can be had for $50 on Amazon. Thanks.

It doesn't perform well for him either. It's shit all around.

Are you connected with WiFi?
Did you bother to connect hard wired to the router?
My bet is that it is NOT Spectrum.

If Wi-Fi for a test move as close to the router as you can even if it means sitting on the floor and spend some time and test test test.

It's probably this.

How old is your router? I know your brother torrents shit, which pretty much kills older routers.

So hard connected. Call them and use brothers name with his permission of course. Spectrum can remotely run a test on your system. No need for a technician -

If Bro will not help you - You may finally need to get that part time paying job and pay for an alternate service in your hood

This router is starting to get some years. It's one that I bought and I've been suspecting that this router is the culprit really. I blame Spectrum because I like to bitch and whine (@879,985 (B)).

There are no alternative services up there and Spectrum won't talk to me unless I am authorized to do so by him. Which is something he always forgets to do or finds excuses for why he can't? I tried calling them before and they told me this is how they do things.

So you have a modem, which connects to a router which connects to your PCs?
Could you do a drawing showing us your networking set up?

Yeah, I'm looking at getting an ethernet extender and some more CAT5 ethernet cables so I could plug my PC into the modem. I noticed there were two spare ethernet ports. Unfortunately, my current cable is short by a couple of feet.

Syntax replied with this 8 years ago, 2 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #880,031

@880,024 (B)
No map required. Because she is hard connected - Just one coax from Spectrum as input - goes to combined Modem/Router - Has four Ethernet jacks on the back - From what she has said - Just two of those Ethernet jacks are connected - Perhaps 3 if Mom uses it as well

If there are DVR-s for TV? Then of course a Coax splitter to feed DVR-r's and the combined Modem/Router

One of the ethernet ports is taken up by the router we have. Not sure where the fourth one is taken up. I think I only counted three on mine.

She has an additional router in the mix, which is probably the problem.

I forget Spectrum's length limit - They will hand you over the counter whatever they have - beyond that limit of a few feet you just buy your own from some local vendor or Amazon has them cheep - Me I just get what I need from Qualcomm.

No need for the extender because as you say you have two spare ports

I mean my literal 50 ft. ethernet cable is a few feet too short to reach the modem. I might try Wal-Mart where I got it fron. It needs to be CAT5 since that is what my 50 ft. cable is.

Syntax replied with this 8 years ago, 5 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #880,046

Oh well a passive extender which is dirt cheep and FREE extra Cat5 Feet from Spectrum - You can look up on web what they offer for free

Then I suspect I owe you an apology re the drawing - Cathy are you telling US you have your old router connected to the Upgraded Package Spectrum provided?

I mean LOL dude - Anon B wood be most correct cause that is probably the cause of ALL UR Problems

No way in HELL You should have the Old router in they upgraded SYSTEM

The router isn't exactly ancient, but yeah, I've suspected it was the router for some time. Do you happen to know what the Spectrum router appears as on WiFi?

You are still not understanding what we BOTH ARE TELLING YOU

Get that Fucking old Router OUT of the Chain - It not only has no purpose at all it IS A Problem - Jammed up with that High Broadband input - Its jammed - Heating up the Front End IC's -

Even WORSE it has NO FUCKING BUSINESS in your system - Spectrum gave you the Combo unit with 4 ports for CAT-5 - Unless you are in need of more than four? Then and only then wood you add an Active Extender BUT that wood have to be one designed for 100 MHz Plus

I get paid a small fortune in hourly consulting fees. You spotted what is a horrid mistrake Cathy has been making - Probably the cause of all of her problems

I guess in her defense she failed to find out what the recent Spectrum upgrade and install was all about - Me I wood take that old router and cover it with gas and burn it EXCEPT that wood be bad for the enviroment

Anonymous B replied with this 8 years ago, 1 minute later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #880,102

@previous (Syntax)
I would burn it anyway, despite the environmental concerns. Even if the equipment she bought was properly rated for her uses, a network switch would have done what she was trying to accomplish just fine and would have costed less.

Syntax, considering that the modem has three or four ethernet ports, wouldn't the router still be needed for other wifi devices such as phones or would I be able to connect through- wait, nevermind, I'm stupid.

Syntax replied with this 8 years ago, 1 minute later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #880,108

Yep - I mean kinda dumb - You and Bro are using the Cat-5 which is two of the 4 ports for Cat-5

All other devices being Wi-Fi use the Wi-Fi of that Combo box from Spectrum. Bet your upload starts working on a test and your drop outs go by by
