Externally hosted imagewhat a fun ride. totally worth seeing in the theaters if you're a nerd.

if you've read the book, don't worry, it's significantly different so it'll feel fresh. but there are some serious departures, so don't expect a super faithful-to-the-book retelling. but for all the changes it kept the same spirit, and also gave us some really outstanding new scenes. and they managed to make my least favorite character from the book into one of my favorite characters in the movie, which was unexpected.

pretty classic Spielberg adventure flick.

I'm not watching it if Neo and the alien pixels don't team up to defeat the demogorgons and save cyberspace like they do in the book.

It's okay for what it is but between the pacing and taking out Wade's fall and most of Aech's reveal it missed some marks for me.

i'm wondering if there'll be a longer directors cut that fixes some of the pacing problems. i bet they cut a shorter, faster paced movie to avoid a 3 hour screen time. it's already like 2 and a half hours long. i agree though, some stuff felt rushed. what missed the mark for me the most was the whole "welcome to the resistance, wade" thing. that whole plot point was dismissed almost as soon as it was introduced and felt like nothing more than a contrivance to set up the early meeting between Parzival and Art3mis.

what about Dieto? did that miss a mark for you? it did for me, i was expecting a more faithful story there. and the movie almost reveled in the fact that they changed that major plot point too and gave him one of Parzival's biggest actions scenes from the book - the mech fight with mecha-godzilla. i'm actually okay with this, because in the book parzival is pretty much a mary sue, and giving some of his actions to others helps that a bit i think. but dieto's arc in the book created a lot of urgency and made the potential consequences feel super dangerous for everyone, that was one thing the movie lacked. i guess they replaced that with the action sequence at the end and tried to create danger and urgency through that. and i guess the book events wouldn't have played well on screen given how little connection is established between Dieto/Sho and everyone else. we aren't given reasons to care about them, we're just supposed to.

i'm hoping a directors cut fleshes out the dieto/sho relationship to the others in the high 5, because they just kinda show up at some point and have that artifact.
