Topic: What are the grammar rules for emoji usage?

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 8 years ago #73,631

Do you put an emoji before or after a word?

For example:

Ask the corporate ? staff ???? at "Toys 'R' Us".

OR

Ask the ? corporate ???? staff at "Toys 'R' Us".

You should never use them in any situation, ever.

I am thinking of going back to work on that emoji guidebook, but I am having a trouble forming a good introduction with a brief history of emoji and emoticons.

you use them in moderation if at all
like
pick up some ? at the supermarket
a better one would be
pick up some chicken at the supermarket ?

No, you should put it after a word or before a word. Never a substitute for a word.

Maybe start with why you're writing it or why we should standardize emoji use or something? You don't have to write the whole thing linearly. Bang out a rough draft to get what you want to say on a page. You can come back to it as you write and make changes as it evolves. A brief history shouldn't be too hard to cobble together.

I really just want to get into the rules I want to put forth.

Honestly, I cannot see how this could be a novel.

Novel

noun
a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity, portraying characters and usually presenting a sequential organization of action and scenes.

A three page leaflet distributed around your community college would not count as a novel, nor would anything you have ever created.

toy store workers don't use briefcases

I once saw a toy store worker with a briefcase full of plastic thumbs. The case opened into a little sales display.
