I remember back when the CEO of Reddit said this:
We stand for free speech. This means we are not going to ban distasteful subreddits. We will not ban legal content even if we find it odious or if we personally condemn it. Not because that's the law in the United States - because as many people have pointed out, privately-owned forums are under no obligation to uphold it - but because we believe in that ideal independently, and that's what we want to promote on our platform. We are clarifying that now because in the past it wasn't clear, and (to be honest) in the past we were not completely independent and there were other pressures acting on reddit. Now it's just reddit, and we serve the community, we serve the ideals of free speech, and we hope to ultimately be a universal platform for human discourse (cat pictures are a form of discourse).

I'm guessing this, at least in part, has to with the recently passed FOSTA/[https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/1693]SESTA bill - the same reason why Craigslist just axed its "Personals" section suddenly. If you are worried about free speech, I would strongly urge you to call or write your representative or senators and tell them how to make America great again.

It was way before FOSTA, if I had to guess I'd say 2014-15 when Reddit's attitude changed. FOSTA had zero to do with banning most controversial subreddits. More like the attitude changed from "We stand for free speech" to "the first amendment doesn't apply to privately-owned forums". And I don't blame them. Supporting "free speech" becomes a lot harder when you realize a lot of people are nazis and/or pedophiles and also Procter and Gamble really doesn't want their Tide Pods banner ad right next to Richard Spencer's latest alt-white manifesto or a guide to shoplifting Tide Pods from Walmart.

I should clarify. I think the current announcement probably has to do with the recent bill and them not wanting to be held criminally liable or sued into oblivion. I haven't seen first-hand how they've handled various sub-reddits re advertising or controversial content because I'm not on Reddit too much now. (I get my news from quality sources like minichan.org) I can certainly see why they have probably backslid on some free and open speech ideals as they have become more mainstream.

no, that's a different thing from telling users that they don't want to be an electronic drug dealing alley, as the FOSTA doesn't have anything to do with nazi stuff, or does it?

It's kind of interesting how free markets put a check on free speech. I'm sure a big corporation like P&G would love to sell Tide Pods to the alt-right (those Klan robes ain't gonna wash themselves!) but they know being seen supporting racism or drug dealing, no matter indirect, will cause the 99% of people who aren't racist drug dealers to stop buying Tide Pods so it's not worth chasing that 1% of the market. The same thing for domain registrars, hosting companies, etc.

Society and social norms put a check on free speech, and I think that's where a lot of those market forces come from in the end. Companies have to try to maintain a public face just like people do, and popularity means trying to be as universally likable as possible. One of the things I kind of enjoy about anonymous speech on the Internet is that lack of interest in maintaining any kind of public identity means people can play with all kinds of ideas freely. Unfortunately, the idea doesn't scale well. A cozy, dark corner of the Internet where you can say anything isn't as cozy or dark once it gains popularity and wider public scrutiny.

Reading the replies and Reddit, there is clearly confusion. Reddit has not changed their free speech policy. They have added a commerce policy.
> forbidding transactions for certain goods and services. As of today, users may not use Reddit to solicit or facilitate any transaction or gift involving certain goods and services, including: (They make a list of such services) and go on to say
Reddit is not intended to be used as a marketplace and takes no responsibility for any transactions individual users might decide to undertake in spite of this.

To the best of my knowledge minichan has only offered one market service and I tried it and found it to be a total scam.

If you're the sort of rabble that can't figure out how to manage time travel, then you probably don't need a gold account. People troll Matt all the time by traveling into the past and planting images on the web. Green can figure out time travel while drunk. Anon D uses quantum time fog. Really, get with the program.
