The whammy 2 (if you don't know) is a pedal that allows you to get up to two octaves up or down. It also has sine cool harmonizing effects. When you combine the pedal with a tremolo system (preferably Floyd Rose or Kahler) and artificial harmonics you can make magic happen. Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine and Dimebag from Pantera are two that come to mind that utilize(d) the Whammy 2 with great results.

What 80s pop songs are you talking about specifically then? A lot of them are pretty formulaic, and that's why their tabs are so basic. I know it's not all just 3 chord progression, but most are fairly simple.
