Topic: I might try to self-teach myself a subject.

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 8 years ago #73,566

I am thinking biology since it is becoming an interest of mine, but I need physics as a requirement so there is no point in taking a biology course. But with resources such as Khan Academy it shouldn’t be too hard to self-teach myself the subject. I could even find a used textbook ? for cheap and take notes ?.

You should self-teach the subject to yourself, with yourself as teacher. Just a thought.

It’s going to be hard to learn something you deny the existence of.

I don’t deny biology. I am aware my chromosomes will always remain XY. It’s a sad truth of the universe.

@875,465 (B)
I intend on doing that too, but I feel I should have a basic understanding of the material before I do just that. Which is where Khan Academy comes into play.

Don't you love it when you make a normal, constructive topic, but the Mordor spams it with videos about The Matrix?
Also, what field of biology are you most interested in?

You will not do this, and play video games instead while your mom works to pay your bills.

I don't do much on video games nowadays. I want something to do and if that means self studying a subject instead then so be it. Plus it allows me to take notes more.

Good idea! You can look up biology classes at a local college and download the syllabus. Then go to Amazon and search for an older edition (ie if they're using the 9th edition now get the 7th) of the text they're using and follow along. You can get lots of older edition textbooks for under $5. A lot of college classes even have video lectures and assignments, exam reviews, etc. posted online free for anyone.

You can download course syllabuses online? I don't need to take biology as a requirement. I need physics.

Professors used to hand out syllabi on real paper on the first day of class. Now they're online. Find a university and search through the schedule of classes like you were a student looking for your course. Most undergrad courses will have a page with links to at least the the course schedule, syllabus, and a link to where to find the textbook online or at the university bookstore.

If you look over the syllabus, then you can at least get a sense of what the class will cover. Use that to prepare for the class or guide your own independent learning on topic. Meta is right about the textbooks though. The new editions usually don't change much other than the order of homework questions or switch some chapter headings around. Basic physics or biology or anything you would study in undergrad doesn't change that much.

It's even better if you do this for required classes. Start learning the material early and you'll get a head start. Say I wanted to take Phys 1401, College Physics 1 (this is what it's called in Texas, California probably calls it something different). Just start googling "Phys 1401 lecture videos", "Phys 1401 exam review", "Phys 1401 syllabus", etc.

Here is an entire, 16 week series of Phys 1401 video lectures from Austin Community College . Here's the syllabus https://eapps.austincc.edu//faculty/syllabus.php?id=208345. Get the book on Amazon for $10 https://www.amazon.com/Physics-Alan-Giambattista/dp/0077339681 and you have a complete Physics 1401 class.

If you do this before the "real" physics class, you can identify anything you're struggling with and have time to work on it.

It's the credential that colleges are charging for. You can get the learning for free.

I hate to derail but I have to ask: did this coincide with your transition, specifically the HRT part?

I wonder because I've noticed women tend to be less interested in video games than men on average.

I was always terrible at video games and lacked motivations regardless of HRT.
