I, personally, see them as being different. A troll is someone who can incite anger/hatred in a very subtle way, or can simply lead people on to believe something.
An asshole is just someone who is insulting and has no methods other than 'ur fat lol'.
Do you see there being a difference between being a troll and just an average asshole?
The reason I'm asking this, is because someone I know is getting a lot of (deserved) hate for telling a girl who was overweight to get an eating disorder and starve herself. She's now getting people telling her she's some sort of master troll because she can be a bitch and then get hate for it. To me, that's not trolling.

I agree with you for the most part, but I don't think inciting anger or annoyance is always on the agenda for trolling. Sometimes, though I guess this is more outside the 4Chan world, trolling is done at the troll's expense. That is to say that they say what they say and do what they do to make themselves look impossibly stupid. Then some dumb-dumb comes along to point out the troll's intentionally painfully obvious error and lulz ensue--for both parties.
I digress a bit. But my point (and I guess it partially echoes what you've already said) is that not all trolling is the malicious kind, therefore rendering the likening of a troll to an asshole invalid.
