Topic: What is the solution of this equation?

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 8 years ago #73,485

I cannot remember if I posted about this years ago, but seeing as this board has new members. I might as well as if anyone here knows the answer. No, this isn't for any given homework assignments.

6 ÷ 2 ( 1 + 2 )

The answer is actually 9. You go from left to right so you would do the division before the multiplication. However, historically, 1 would be the answer due to how a typeface displayed the division sign as x/(1+2). There is an argument that can be made for 1, but the correct answer due to current rules of mathematics is 9.

There are brands of calculator that will give a different answer, because they will treat implicit multiplication differently from explicit, giving priority to implicit multiplication such as 4(3) or 5k as if it was written within (4(3)) and (5k).

@874,985 (Catherine !TGirlYJKXM)
You do not go from left to write. You go parantheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, in that order. This is called the “order of operations”, and it produces the correct answer of 1. Thanks.

Actually Einstein may have learned to conclude that same answer. There is also a very high super high level of math that wood conclude the same.

Today This Century, 1 IS NOT Correct but it could be IF you had a very special something

I'm high right now and can hold both answers as true in my mind. The answer is both 9 and 1, 9+1=10.

Math of course is supposed to be absolute and it is - Does require Conventions So Math requires symbols. Cave men carved them on rocks and they were not all in accord with each other.

You do if you have a problem that shows division before multiplication. PEMDAS can also become PEDMSA, PEDMAS, or PEMDSA.

Like what this problem becomes:

6 ÷ 2 ( 3 )

You don't immediately jump to the multiplication, you start with the division, this is where the left to right rule comes in.

Sheila LaBoof replied with this 8 years ago, 20 minutes later, 12 hours after the original post[^] [v] #875,067

right, multiplication and division have equal status, excepting the alternative standard where implicit multiplication has priority

So Math is absolute and the language of Math includes English and Latin. Dem Hebrews have to use English rules regarding reading Left to Rite

So Math can get fucked up based on Language NOT being Absolute. Throw out a Symbol and agree that when it is missing it still appears as a Phantom or Ghost as if it were there.

Here is a trick how to get it right you colossal retards:

6 ÷ 2 ( 1 + 2 )

Write it like pic related because that's what it is.

Then it turns into (6*(1+2)) / 2

That turns into (6*3) / 2

That is 18 / 2

That is 9.

9 is the correct answer, if you think it's 1, you're retarded.

I wanted to see what people here think the answer is. It seems like only 1 person believes the answer is 1. The correct answer is 9. The error is that people neglect that left to right rule whenever division comes before multiplication or subtraction before addition in a problem.
