Topic: I spoke with my school councilor today.

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 8 years ago #73,419

We discussed transferring to an university. She also thought it was great that I was considering psychology as my second major. She says there is a lot someone can do with a psychology degree so I asked if all of the students that I know who are also majoring in psychology would lead to an overabundance of workers in those fields much like the medical fields. She said not really since psychology is much more spread out and there are different individual fields a person can enter.

I asked what some of those fields were besides the ones I felt pulled toward such as family therapist or councilor. She mentioned two jobs that two people here either recommended me or told me they see me as.

I want Kook and Becky to guess what those two jobs were since you were the ones who told me. ;-)

With such a degree I could even get a job at that LGBT center too.

She gave me a little bit of "homework" which was to go through an orientation at California Cafe which is a website dedicated to careers and helping someone find one that they wish to pursue.

As far as graduation requirements, I knew I forgot something needed which was a humanities course and an art course. I mentioned that I wanted to pursue filmmaking on the side of my main studies so she recommended "Film As An Art Form" for my art requirement and Intercultural communications (summer course) for my humanities. I would have to take one more English course which would be English 104 Critical Thinking. I think my current English 101 instructor teaches that course too. I like him.

No, do you remember when you told me that you don't really picture me as a therapist or psychiatrist, but more of a social worker?

That is something that can be achieved with a major in psychology.

Do you need a degree to get a job at the lgbt center?

It really might be a good ides for you to start volunteering somewhere. I feel like it might help you get a feel of what working is like. It worries me that you havent worked before and that your first occupation will be something difficult.

I already took my first foray into volunteer work with that club position. I'm active as of right now.

@874,578 (kook !!OPZbEQMT1)
They obviously meant in the more social worker / therapist positions, but I'm sure there are other jobs that one could apply for. I am thinking of asking them when I go down there if there is anything I could volunteer for. Transportation is the issue, but that is the reason I am going down there since I heard they could accommodate that or something.

kook !!OPZbEQMT1 replied with this 8 years ago, 6 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #874,599

@previous (Catherine !TGirlYJKXM)
But what do you do in your position? Is the work regular/daily? Are you accountable to anyone? What will you do for transportation when you have a real job?

The work is weekly. I took the position because I was told that a club position looks good on a resume and I wanted to give back to the club that allowed me to get some friends. I basically jot down what we talk about during the meetings and rely what was discussed to another meeting with representatives of other clubs. Also, vice versa. I wish that I knew when these meetings were (not the club ones) since they haven't informed anybody about times or days yet. It's annoying when you want to plan ahead.

If I get a local job, probably the bus or my mom could drop me off. At least nobody has to worry about me ever being late since I am always early with the bus. I always forgot what time my class starts because I am so early too.

beware of discredited techniques though:
Angel therapy for treatment of mental/behavioral disorders: doesn't work
Use of pyramids for restoration of energy: bullcrap, it is bullcrap
Orgone therapy (use of orgone box or orgone energy accumulator) for treatment of mental/behavioral disorders: nonsense
Crystal healing for treatment of mental/behavioral disorders: not effective
Past lives therapy for treatment of mental/behavioral disorders: fuck off with that

the list gets really long

Its good that you're volunteering, but once a week makes it not similar to a real job. Do you understand why I worry?

> Use of pyramids for restoration of energy
What the fuck kind of shit is this? Holistic?
> Angel therapy
I'm gonna Google that one.
> Orgone therapy
That too.
> Crystal healing
Holistic?
> Past lives therapy
That's dumb.

I'm going to be attending a job fair that is hosted at the college soon, but I am looking at getting a minimal wage job. Homework and shit kind of pulled my attention away from my resume.

I don't think there is a single specialty that only deals with gender.

Also, since Kook didn't response to the question I propose, I'll just reveal this. She told me that I could be an instructor / professor. This is something that a psychology degree can open up too to my surprise.
