Topic: Will Universal Basic Income actually happen?

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 8 years ago #73,162

I can honestly seeing this become the next hot topic in the 2020’s. Replacing Universal Healthcare. Shit, if the argument is that every citizen of a country should get a livable income then there would be no need to talk UHC since everybody would be able to afford the healthcare system as it exists now.

The 2020’s really is going to get scary.

> Universal Basic Income
The prime objective of Communism based on Karl Marx.
"all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs."

Even Karl was smart enough to imagine a huge number of citizens would be shiftless and lazy.

> every citizen of a country should get a livable income

That is just bat shit crazy. People which probably includes you would end up playing video games all day.

Isn’t UBI just welfare? So why would the state own anything? This whole ideal feels like half Marx.

@873,115 (C)
Nah, I’d use the money for equipment to pursue photography and maybe filmmaking.

only if you pay the jacked-up insurance rates. If you don't have insurance you can negotiate the price down, which is what the insurance companies do anyway while billing your policy for the full amount.

> Isn’t UBI just welfare?
Because I only remember Bernie shouting out UBI and shaking my head. I looked UBI up with Wiki.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_income

I read down to line 3 on this device.
"among other things, that there is no state requirement to work or to look for work in such a society. The payment is also, in such a pure basic income, totally independent of any other income"

So again I can only conclude that this indeed is just bat shit crazy. I stopped reading at this point.

So far that money is selectively handed out. Not freely available to just anyone who comes along and asks for it.

So of course as Anon D -
Yea kinda. Old idea about how to pay welfare. I wood have to review that vs the newer concept of just handing out money to anyone who asks for it.

Got to split for one more business meeting - None NOT one of these this week has amounted to anything but lots of food and Champagne and will continue for a while unless 2Morrows planned blow out ends this cycle - Company I do a huge amount of consulting was in process of being Raped by another company which wood have ended my work as Consultant - Trump who I despise, decided the Rape wood not be in best interest of USA over all and ordered the Rape to HALT.

Wouldn't this most likely be implemented with a set maximum that a person is given so that way it entices them to go to school to get one of the higher paying careers so they could add more money on top of the very basic package? This is what I thought UBI usually meant. We give you a livable salary, but it wouldn't be a luxurious salary. You still have to work for that shit, nigga. I guess I may have been misunderstanding the meaning of UBI, but I always assumed this was going to be something to replace minimal wage work.

The likely culprit would be automation replacing human workers for those basic cashier work. I'm willing to bet restocking would be the next thing to automate if it hasn't already.

But they would be losing money with the tax "loopholes" removed. I feel like many of the high income earners would just leave.

Regarding the minimum wage people and sudden free time. Its an odd situation because it seems as though they would have enough to live but not enough to enjoy their newly found curricular hours. Would we see a resurgence in gangs? In alcohol and drug dependency? Also how much of peoples self worth times into their productivity? Should we/would we be teaching them new trades?
