I had major surgery when I was younger. I just remember laying there, a bunch of doctors around me. They put the mask on, had me say something (think it was count backwards or something) then boom it's a few hours later and I wake up with a bunch of tubes sticking out of me and a painful stomach. Don't worry about this bullshit "I'm afraid I'll wake up", that never happens.

Its kind of scary at first when you're getting ready, like with all the machines and things. But the anesthesia literally just turns your brain off and its like nothing ever happened. When you wake up, whatever the worked on might feel awkward or uncomfortable, or what have you. But it's never a problem.

Anesthesia awareness is very rare. You'll have an anaesthetist sitting with you and making sure you're OK. Even in the extremely rare case you are aware, most people still don't actually feel any pain. It's an irrational fear and there's no need to worry about it.
