But I have an honest question for you. Let’s say there is a poor coal miner in West Virginia. He depends on government welfare to eat, and his inevitable blacklung will kill him quickly unless Obamacare allows him to get medical help. Basically, although he is ha very hard worker and an honest man, 95% or more of his life is dependant on the US government. This coal miner knows nothing about Muslims or Mexicans. Hell, he cannot even find the places on a map. He is too busy working to survive, to do any sort of study or education. Now, here comes Donald Trump, telling this coal miner that his problems are caused by people in some exotic, foreign land whom this miner did not even know existed. Trump then goes on to promise to take away that miner’s Obamacare and welfare. Why would that miner vote for Trump, unless something is actually, chemically or biologically wrong with his brain?

Stupid miner is responsible for his own life. I as a tax payer will not help people who are uneducated.

Do we? So if that miner dies there will be another uneducated person to take his place.

I wish the coal mines were closed. Coal is costly in the long run, because it makes both the educated and the uneducated ill.

Given that the average starting salary for a coal miner is $60,000 a year why would a coal miner be "95% or more dependent" on the US government to to feed himself and keep a roof over his head?

I simply typed in Coal Miner salary and got this top hit
The average starting salary for a coal mine worker is $60,000. "You can come right out of high school and make $70,000 a year," said Missy Perdue, 22, a stay-at-home mother whose husband, Jeff Perdue, Jr., 22, is a miner.

> Sorry, I thought someone with a masters degree would be able to figure out how these newfangled hyperlinks work.

That masters degree is only useful for ordering a cup of coffee in 5 other languages none of which are Asian.

@OP
Also you're conflating several, very different, things.
> Now, here comes Donald Trump, telling this coal miner that his problems are caused by people in some exotic, foreign land whom this miner did not even know existed.
Trump has never said - no one has ever said - that declining coal production and employment is because of "Muslims or Mexicans". Trump said the decline of coal was caused by more restrictive environmental regulations that made coal more difficult and expensive to mine and use (thus making it less competitive with other energy sources) and which he promised to roll back. For someone whose livelihood depends on coal, it would be very much in their self interest to vote for someone promising to make coal more competitive as an energy source.

Now say your family, your town, your whole state depends on coal. Who are you going to vote for? The candidate who says he's going to bring coal back, or the candidate who says "So for example, I'm the only candidate which has a policy about how to bring economic opportunity using clean renewable energy as the key into coal country." What are these jobs? How many coal miners are qualified to do them? It's all quite uncertain which is the last thing you want when you're on the verge of losing everything.

If coal miners are making such great salaries, how come there is so much information out there about poor coal miners who are indebted to their companies and cannot find health insurance? But, I digress. This is missing the point. The “coal miner” part of my hypothetical is not the important part. No matter what their job is, there are many Trump supporters who are very poor and need welfare and Obamacare, yet who voted for a man who wants to take them away. Why do they do this? That is the crux of my question.

You asked specifically about West Virginia coal miners and I gave a good, logical reason they would vote for Trump over Hillary.

> coal miners who are indebted to their companies
I googled this verbatim and couldn't find anything. Do you mean in the old days when there was a company town with a company store? As far as I can tell this ended in the 1950s.
> cannot find health insurance?
Again I couldn't find anything.

As I said, the “coal miner” opart is not the point. I am talking about poor, rural Trump voters who are screwing themselves by voting for him. I thought this could be arational discussion for once.
