From the Wiki:

Colt started selling the semi-automatic version of the M16 rifle as the Colt AR-15 in 1964. The first mass production version was the Colt AR-15 Sporter, in .223 Remington, with a 20-inch barrel and issued with 5-round magazines.

Wow, the history of the gun is actually pretty fascinating. It's been through a number of changes over the years including variants and different barrel lengths and magazine sizes. I imagine one thing that has changed is that an AR-15 in 1964 was probably a lot harder to find and represented a significant investment at the time that limited it's popularity. So I feel like pretending there were good 'ol days when everyone could own an AR-15 and not shoot each other is a bit of a fiction.

Really though, you had mobsters spraying streets with tommy guns decades before the AR-15 existed. American society was no stranger to gun violence at that point.

The US is one of the most violent, violence-loving societies in the world.

Which is what makes our television shows so much more interesting than other countries.

production of AR-15 style rifles has skyrocketed and the market is flooded with super cheap, easy to operate, highly lethal, and loosely regulated weapons.
you can find an ar for as low as 300 bucks these days. in the 80 and 90s a "milspec" ar was way more than a standard hunting rifle. now they're cheaper cause they're not used for hunting, they're used for fun. and sometimes spree killings. but mostly for fun.

not to mention the modern accessories, with the right optics you can be way more lethal than with fixed sights. lots has changed, but mostly they're way, way more plentiful and there are endless low cost varieties. if you haven't visited a gun store recently, they don't look like your grandads hunting lounge anymore. everything is tacticool and no one is buying "hunting rifles." but they got you covered on short barrel pistol grip shotguns and other NFA firearms.

At least with so many high powered guns in the US the Russians will think twice before invading.
