Still feelin the Bern ? @previous (D)

I do mean it - if he launches a serious 2020 effort he gets 100% of my political support.

To clarify: by "serious", I mean he officially announces it and makes at least one campaign rally/speech thing. Support valid until Bernie either wins the nomination or quits. If Bernie wins the nomination in 2020, I will keep supporting him until the election is over.

Ok but why? You were libertarian and then you went weirdly like not quite actual pro Trump, though you still have a soft spot for Romney. Now you're backing Sanders. What exactly is going on?

Anonymous G joined in and replied with this 7 years ago, 7 minutes later, 1 year after the original post[^] [v] #970,203

I think Meta might be a populist at heart. It looks a little odd against a modern political backdrop, but some would argue that the will of the people, whatever that may be, is the purest form democracy. Don't ask me about the Romney thing though, I can't pretend to understand that.

I would understand populist libertarianism in a Brandeis-ian sense of being against "bigness in both business and government" if that was Meta's schtick, but it's not and never was. He was a rothbard/mises libertarian until he wasn't, and he was pro-Trump, but doesn't criticize Trump for being incredibly elitist in terms of policy & cabinet selection, and is now supporting Sanders who is like polar opposite policy-wise, though he shares a campaign style with Trump in that politics is framed as us (the 99%/white rural + not college educated) vs. them (the 1%/globalist elites and their immigrant goons).

Not that I want or expect perfect rigidity in ideology over time, but people always frame politics in terms of "I believe X due to deep principles", which doesn't seem to be true because people fly around and support politicians with wildly conflicting ideologies and policies. It just doesn't make any sense.

> though he shares a campaign style with Trump in that politics is framed as us (the 99%/white rural + not college educated) vs. them (the 1%/globalist elites and their immigrant goons)

Yep. That's the populism I'm reaching for to explain this. I'm thinking it's more a sense of siding with the people at large. Libertarians like to draw a line between "the people" and "the government" representing the government as some outside force to be resisted. Libertarianism always seems to hit a weird wall when when that world view runs up against government regulation being the collective will of the people or self-organizing structures like labor unions. Trump's campaign was cast in a lot of ways as the common sense outsider up against the Washington DC establishment. Trump is a piss poor choice to represent the common person, but those were the optics his team was shooting for in a lot of areas.

If you slice the political situation up to pit the people against "the government" or "the elites" or "establishment politics" or whatever and you always come down of the side of the common people, you have a position that makes Meta's choices make more sense. I don't want to put words in his mouth, but that is why I don't see his position as surprising or inconsistent.

I think you guys are both trying to find a galaxy-brain level explanation for this. I think a Bernie vs Trump 2020 election would be absolutely hilarious. I do disagree with Bernie on pretty much everything but I respect him because he's sincere. Trump's kind of the opposite, not much sincerity but he's an absolute master P.T. Barnum-level showman. I'm not sure what Trump's real positions are on anything but it's entertaining to watch him work. Trump is like MSG. It has little flavor on its own, maybe a little salty, but put it in food and BAM!! I could see Trump running as a moderate Democrat and winning. I think he actually WAS a Democrat for a few decades.

A Trump-Bernie match would be the best showman vs the most sincere, as opposed to most politicians where they're not very sincere or very good showmen but just sort of mediocre at both.

Trump and Bernie are kind of like the opposite of each other in every way and I think that would be really neat to see play out. I want a real political fight. Not this bullshit where they're arguing over whether the tax rate should be 10% or 15% I want them arguing about real shit, like whether we even have private property at all.

As I've said many times, I don't agree with Trump on everything, or even most things. I didn't support him (and I do identify as a Trump supporter in case anyone is confused) based on policy so much as entertainment value.

I've never renounced libertarianism and I still agree with everything on Mises.org. I just no longer think it has any chance of catching on as a mainstream philosophy and I've given up all hope of a President Ron (or even Rand) Paul. Given that, I now have to make politics as enjoyable as possible for myself since I'll never get someone who actually agrees with me on the issues.

That was well ritten and sure makes your position clear. Yep Trump is indeed a modern day P.T. Barnum.

If he can hold on to his infamous base and if he makes it past some wacko with a NRA approved weapon - He could clearly win again. Biden could give him a run for his money - Alas Biden is just to nice a guy and Trump wood just roll over Biden as if he was a Bulldozer

Maybe after USA solves its massive debt then it can turn to Health Care for everyone.
