Just because I am tired of overloading this place with a ton of Minecraft content. I am making a new thread where I could just post about every shit I do in this game or report on upcoming Minecraft related news. Think of this like my wrestling "blog" thread only the subject is different. I am not putting my name in the subject line as to encourage others to use this thread for their experiences with the game since I am not just making this thread for me, but for others here who may still play the game, though, a majority of you have moved onward. Have fun!

I am messing around with the latest 1.13 snapshot, 18w07c, and we finally have an easy to construct player elevator. I set up a little experiment here. You make the shaft going up and then place the water like normal at the top. At the bottom, you place soulsand in a no less than 2x2 configuration. This will cause you to float up at an enormous speed allowing you to cross to the other side which is your usual fall drop into a pool of water below. Magma Blocks have the opposite effect of soulsand in that it forces you down, but you cannot swim upwards so it isn't recommended.

I am looking to start a nation that I decided to change the name of since this isn't Earth so it shouldn't really be the U.S.A. until later on so I decided to call this new country "The Heartland" and their banner/flag would still be Old Glory. So in essence, we are the U.S.A. except where I am stationed it feels like the old west mix in a little bit of California too.

I gave you a larger pier that is larger than mine so you should have plenty of room to fish and there is a side way entrance that you can dock your boat at. Welcome to the Heartland, partner!

I was sure the decision to use paper as currency among us was agreed upon by 16bitch, dallas, and myself. Nobody objected to it, but this is always open for debate and a vote.
I would like to note before voting commences, as pointed out by Dallas, paper has become a pretty hefty export for emeralds from neighboring villages. We now have plenty of sugar cane farms to keep the riches flowing.
All in favor of paper remaining the currency within Heartland territory vote yay. All oppose with nay.

Squeegee, is sugar cane really a good way of getting emeralds? Because I am testing around in 1.13 right now to develop a new strategy for getting rich quickly on any server and I honestly cannot believe that I never thought about trading paper for emeralds. I always assumed I had to get something fancy like a raw chicken farm.
squeegee replied with this 8 years ago, 32 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^][v]#866,226
@previous (Catherine !TGirlYJKXM)
i have no idea. you're the one who caught the paper=>emerald guy, i just built a huge sugar cane farm. i thought you singled him out because it's hard to find villagers to trade something simple for emeralds. i don't actually know how villagers and trading works. do they all sell stuff for emeralds?
i was thinking there's probably a way to build a sugar cane farm with pistons that automatically harvests them using hoppers and boxes and maybe even build a railroad and box storage facility next to the guy to collect wheat from the farm. then we'd just have to convert them to emeralds. or i guess we just move the guy, we could do that too i guess.
and i thought we were using paper as currency because there's a 24-2 trade ratio with that dude to emeralds, and emeralds can be used to buy anything from any villager, right?
so in lieu of trading emeralds with each other, in the event we'd ever need to, then paper would make an additional currency. like i thought the paper thing was actually tied to that villager and available emerald production.
i didn't think we were just picking a "thing" to use as currency, like gold. cause tbh who the fuck even wants gold. there are mods that i've played with that use gold as a currency, and i'd be fine with that, but i thought it was "paper backed by emeralds" since we, you know, got the villager guy. and really i thought that that was mostly so we could stockpile emeralds and use them to buy other hard to get shit, like iron and diamonds, from villagers.
and what we ought to probably do is find the villagers that are traders, and build them a shop or something and lock them inside so we won't have to look for them constantly. like you did with Emerald guy.
and if emerald guy is going to be our Mint for converting paper into Emeralds then we need to build a Vault and put his ass inside. if he dies our economy dies. or we'll have to trade harder to obtain commodities for Emerald. i liked paper because it's easy to make.
so really i guess we probably should just be using Emeralds as currency and converting all paper to emeralds.
squeegee double-posted this 8 years ago, 3 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^][v]#866,227
@865,463 (E)
yeah, we don't really need "money," but villager use emeralds to do trade. i say we just do that and use emeralds as "money" and setup paper farms to obtain large amounts of Emerald wealth to trade for commodities with villagers. since they use emeralds, we should use emeralds.

Chicken and paper are both easy ways to get emeralds, it's just a matter of which type of villager you find and who gives the best exchange rate. Also it's probably easier and more compact to make and automate a chicken farm than it is to automate cane harvesting.

Now that 1.13 looms on the horizon and that drops that end up in the water float to the top. Gone are the days of diving into the 1 block of water to fetch the remainders. Yeah, TNT still makes a decent 3x3 tunnelway, but there are a lot of stragglers that don't blow up with the blocks. The video showed that only one or two blocks might not explode, so I think TNT mechanics has changed some time ago. Still, it's less to dig up to clean up the way compared to mining all of that out. I might consider mining with TNT more often, plus it sounds like fun to just blow shit up. I really want to find a use to use this block more.

I might as well ask Squeegee here, but I was doing some thinking about how people call Minecraft a medieval setting yet for some reason I do not believe this to be the case. I think I finally found what Minecraft could be compared to in terms of lore and setting. Minecraft feels more like a fairytale to me. In this book I am reading they even mentioned that fairytales do not rely on making connections to actual persons, locations, or historical events (one of the reasons why the bible is a historical document and not a fairytale). Minecraft doesn't rely on making a connection to any of those unless the player purposely draws such connections. The game does feel like a fairytale especially when you take into consideration the monsters like witches, skeletons, zombies, etc. Do you agree with this notion?
squeegee replied with this 8 years ago, 57 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#867,941

"fairytale" isn't a setting. a setting is a place, and every fairytale has a setting, like "forest" or "grandmas house" or even "futuristic retro steampunk city." they may not be set in a specific location from the real world, but they are still set somewhere. you wouldn't say they are "set" in a fairytale. you'd say they are in a fairy tale set in a medieval style videogame world.
minecraft is a sandbox, you're making your own story, if you want to make it a fairytale then that's great. even if it's more of a post-apocalyptic nation building and survival game (imo).
but the setting isn't "fairytale." it's probably most accurate to say medieval because of the technologies used and in the fantasy genre because of magic and monsters.
you're not wrong, but, you're trying to make too much of a distinction that's just confusing. setting isn't the word you're looking for. maybe genre is more appropriate.
and i would say that a lack of any clear moral message also fails to distinguish it as a "fairytale" genre game if such a thing even exists. i guess if there's any clear moral to the story, the moral is "16bitch needs to learn about boundaries," which is a lesson i think we all can learn from.

@previous (squeegee) > magic and monsters
Where is the magic to be honest? I keep hearing that this game involves magic and yet I don't see any. Is it because of the alchemy? Redstone? I'm pretty sure that redstone was long considered electricity by many of the pro redstoners. I keep hearing people say magic, but I never understood where that magic comes from.
I suppose the moral to Minecraft could be that nothing in life is going to be handed to you so you have to get out there and take what you want most out of life yourself.
> post-apocalyptic nation building and survival game
Is this post-apocalyptic in the sense that it's Life After People almost a million years afterwards to where nature reclaimed most of her bounty? Because that is what I sometimes make myself believe.
Also, have you heard of this Minecraft creator? I highly recommend his works. He makes resource packs (texture packs) and he makes them in such a way that he adds new items to the game just by changing a pre-existing item in the game. For example, you can make a diamond drill just by renaming a diamond pickaxe in an anvil to "Diamond Drill" and adding an enchanted book of Efficiency (any level). He cannot wait to see what 1.13 allows for his ItemBound pack.
yeah, alchemy is magic potions. and weapons and armor are presumably enchanted with magic. you use like a magical enchanting table thing. how is there not magic in minecraft?

uh, yeah, i noticed. they're all dead. it stopped being a chicken farm and was a nuisance. if you want a chicken farm then you have to keep them contained. the Middletown Homeowner's Association was willing to look the other way on this while it was being kept contained and manageable, but as soon as you let them spread into the mines it can't be ignored. The HOA wants to issue you a citation for "griefing" due to the absurd number and placement of the farm, but i'm only going to issue you a warning this time.
If you do it again then there will be penalites, and possible eviction from your property and even banishment from the community.
in the future, all chicken farms will conform to either a small 6x6 fenced enclosure above ground near a Villager hut, or be of a compact "grinder" design which will need to be met with eventual approval by the HOA. the mines are now off limits to any type of animal farming, and any illegal chicken farms found in the mines will be destroyed without notice.
if you want a chicken farm that doesn't conform to the rules then you'll need to seek written approval from the HOA.

thought y'all might like to see how the Middletown mines are being built. if you don't already know they're being built with an automated minecart system that carries cargo from deep inside the mines up to a storage facility on the surface.
pictured: minecart shuttling cargo to the surface by way of overhead tracks
squeegee double-posted this 8 years ago, 2 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,536
it's pretty simple to use, you dump whatever you want in the box and a minecart shuttles it to the surface automatically.
squeegee triple-posted this 8 years ago, 3 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,537
it's a little more complicated under the hood.
squeegee quadruple-posted this 8 years ago, 10 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,538
this is a mock up of all 4 levels of the mines. the stone blocks all are parts of the main shafts and halls you use to get to all of the branches. there is a set of stairs that leads to the "surface", and all of the long wooden rows represent the 1x2 smaller branches that make up the productive part of the mines. you can image expanding the stone halls and adding more and more rows of branching mine shafts to create a gigantic grid like pattern that grows outwardly from the center
the orange, blue and light blue blocks represent the automatic minecart system. the light blue blocks show the basic placement of hoppers used to connect each level with a vertical pipe. the orange lines represent 4 independent minecart tracks that operate between the central column and very far away junctions. the dark blue line represents the "main line" which cycles between the lowest level of the central column and the surface storage building.
squeegee quintuple-posted this 8 years ago, 10 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,539
mock up of a junction station. these will be something like 500 blocks away from the central column. miners can start from one of the branches at the central column, and dig towards a junction, eventually poking right through one of the doors if you keep the tunnel straight.
again the orange line represents the minecart that cycles between this junction and the central hub. the light blue line represents a pipe of hoppers that connects the upper level to the lower level with the minecart.
squeegee sextuple-posted this 8 years ago, 6 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,541
the blue line is running inefficiently around the entirety of the mines, and this is for aesthetics. this route lets the carts run overhead through all of the main hallways and just looks cool when they go by. makes the mines feel active and working.
squeegee septuple-posted this 8 years ago, 2 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,542
the whole structure of the central column spirals down and the branches fan out from the from, leaving a "backless corkscrew" shape that leaves plenty of room to accomodate as complex a minecart system as i'd like.
squeegee octuple-posted this 8 years ago, 5 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,545
the automatic minecarts aren't really all that complicated though, the basic mechanism is pretty compact, but it can be stalled by overloading. there is an error proof design that is slightly larger, but can still be built within the volume of the central column.
squeegee nonuple-posted this 8 years ago, 8 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,550
the basic mechanism. uses a comparator to determine if the cart is full or empty on one side, and if a hopper is full or empty on the other. if the cart comes into the left side full then the cart stops to unload, otherwise it cycles back to the right. on the right a comparator is looking at a hopper and if it's full then it stops the minecart, unloads the hopper into the chest, and then sends it to unload on the left. if the hopper is empty then cycles the cart back.
this isn't really optimal though. if you fill the chest all the way until both it and the hopper are full, then the minecart will stall until someone comes and empties the hopper to let the minecart cycle back to unload. so this can't be used to service the main line at the central hub. it'll be fine for the unloading (unless the storage is maxed, which is possible to do, but if that happens it doesn't matter if it cycles back anyway.)
squeegee decuple-posted this 8 years ago, 23 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,557
a quick and dirty solution to the loading bug is to use a timer instead of a comparator check of the hopper contents. this is a classic piston hopper timer that has an adjustable delay of up to like a minute or almost two or something like that. there are other long timers, but most are more complex and this one can be used to power the minecart rail on and off. but, it's not without it's own problems. the rail is powered for the same amount of time that the rail is unpowered. which means that if the cart returns early then it will cycle back without loading anything. it'll do that until the timer cycles the redstone block back to the "off" position.
so this means that either your timer needs to be set to less than that of a trip back and forth, or you add a matching mechanism up top with an equivalent timer and pause them until a minecart triggers the timer.
this works pretty well, and is not possible to break by just using it. the drawback here is that can at max collect 5 stacks of items per trip, just 1 full hopper load, which is the maximum length of the timer being used here. the trip is pretty brief though, so it'll empty a chest fairly quickly even with the extra trips involved.
probably for most purposes this will be fine as is, with no more complexity than that. mining a branch from the central hub to a junction 500 blocks away will leave a miner with at least 16 stacks (1k blocks) which is way less than will even break the first design. and that's only 3 or 4 trips back and forth with the second design.
so really either way things shouldn't get badly broken
squeegee undecuple-posted this 8 years ago, 5 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,562
this is the hopper piston timer minecart return, and you can see the intervention i did to synchronize the two timers. the timer is counting down and will toggle the redstone block to release the minecart

squeegee replied with this 8 years ago, 3 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,569
the timer has toggled the redstone block and activated the rail. it will begin to countdown again. when the countdown ends this time the timer will stall because the left piston is being held open with torch on the inverter to the left. when the minecart returns it will pass over the detector which will toggle the inverter and release the piston allowing the track to depower until the timer flips it back on.
squeegee double-posted this 8 years ago, 20 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,581
i figure i can add complexity to fix just about any problem, but i'm not sure i have enough space for fancy logic and also add a second mainline to carry ore and other valuables separately. i'm pretty sure i could make it feed furnaces and chests to possibly automate it up to the point of dumping ore into a box deep on the other end of the mine, and then find a box of metal bars waiting for you on the surface when you get back. i know i can have at least 2 mainlines feeding the surface if i get more creative with hopper pipes, but for every mainline there's 4 service lines and 4 additional hopper pipes at the junctions, and any extensions to the junctions will be a lot more work. separating into common blocks(cobble, dirt, gravel, granite, etc.) and metal ores will probably be as far as i want to break it down. unless there's an automatic sorting machine type thing out there. if there is, i can mainline everything into a sorting machine and then run service lines to specific storage areas or to furnaces or whatnot. i'll have to google that.
pictured: size compared to nearby village
squeegee triple-posted this 8 years ago, 9 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,590
yup, there's sorting machines. lol, they're actually pretty compact too. soooo, i guess we'll only need one mainline, and 4 service lines and everything'll get shoved through a sorting machine and then into storage.
that'll make it easier to want to add player rail service lines to the 4 planned junctions
squeegee quadruple-posted this 8 years ago, 31 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,610
okay, so this works. a sorting machine can separate out the ore, send it to furnaces that auto load with coal, and out pops the finished metal bars
squeegee quintuple-posted this 8 years ago, 1 minute later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,611
it seems to want to recognize the lower hopper as being for fuel, and the top hopper being for ore. loading infinite coal into the lower box doesn't break the auto cooker when the top box is empty. so i can have the furnaces autoload with fuel and ore.
oh, i need to see if hoppers pull metal bars out of furnaces.
squeegee sextuple-posted this 8 years ago, 4 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^][v]#869,612

level 6 mines are very dangerous. you're very, very likely to run into lava, in fact one whole side faces a pretty good sized lava pool about 80 blocks in. idk about the other side. the lava pool will be dealt with by getting above it and dropping enough gravel into it to displace the majority of it. past that, idk what will be found.
so beware on six until the Lava warning signs are removed, but always try to keep a bucket of water on you. it may save your life and all of your valuables.

i've spent a fuckload of iron rerouting the minecart tracks on the blueline to service level 6 instead of level 18. this made it hard to afford to build hoppers, so for the time being the very space inefficient hopper/chest extravaganza you see here is what links all of the Deposit Boxes to a single pickup point.

i left all structures built by players alone until it's decided if the Homeowner's Association is going to mandate brick foundations instead of cobblestone.

Is there like a walkthrough or something for how to install mods with the shitty new win10-ified launcher they made? I tried twice to install minimap but eventually gave up because it seemed like they somehow engineered it to only work with vanilla versions, which wouldn't particularly surprise me since it's owned by M$ now.

Yeah, there's a really good walthrough I used. It's called "using various sources found on Google and seeing what works and what doesn't". It works pretty well for me.

They changed the color of the phantoms. That seemed a little dumb. The all black looked fucking terrifying when you see it spawn above you like a bunch of vultures. This looks like Mordecai from Regular Show.

the Heartland Junction of the Anaconda Mine is now open. this first level is a Level 18 Iron/Gold mine. a lower diamond mine will be coming soon.
try to keep your floor on the same level. if you encounter a ravine or a cave, build a bridge across to keep on the same level and then continue the mineshaft. this is the most efficient method. you can start on either end, at Middletown or at Heartland, and if you keep your floors level and your mineshaft straight you're pop out the other side right through to the main corridors where you can dump cargo into storage or ride back on a convenient minecart railway (under construction.)
edit: oh yeah, hey DW, i stole 22 gold from you and 5 powered rail. i took them to speed up getting rail service to the Heartland Junction. i'll pay restitution.

the entrance is here, next to a building in downtown that i plan to convert into the Heartland division of the Middletown Mining Co.
it can be found across from catherine's house on the other side of the sand dunes and sugar cane ponds.
squeegee triple-posted this 8 years ago, 3 minutes later, 2 weeks after the original post[^][v]#870,391
i know it looks like shit, but it's just roughed out. and it'll be getting full rail service that'll run from the surface to the mines as well as back and forth to Middletown.

I noticed there was a trend of Minecraft YouTubers quitting. This makes me wonder. Would anyone be interested if I were to start my own Minecraft YouTube channel?
Also, 1.13 just added a new mob called "Drowned mobs" which look like zombies but one of them can fire an arrow like a skeleton, although there are now drowned skeletons sadly. They look wicked as fuck. This update is possibly going to be the greatest update for this game.

Because Notch fucking goofed and couldn't implement the original idea. Microsoft should be able to do lanterns justice.
THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO COMPLETELY REPLACE TORCHES FOR MOST USES. TORCHES WERE ALWAYS MEANT TO BE OF TEMPORARY USE BEFORE THEY BURN OUT.

Java Edition apparently has the most developers working on it than the Bedrock Edition. Development most likely won't cease for a few years maybe. I think the current plan is to use the Java Edition currently to test features before implementing them into the Bedrock Editions of the game.

This mod is nice. I love how it encourages more nomadic/tribal life instead of the usual medieval or industrial game-play that this game came to imitate.
The story is that I am a lost Native American girl with the lessons given to her by her father, the Chief, has to survive in the wilderness alone and becomes a Tribe of One.

Dolphins are officially in the game and a new block that I have the feeling that many technical mods will utilize since this is the first instance of "power" besides redstone to be added to the game.
