Basically reset the gun scene to 1900. No assault clips, no AK-15*s with bump stocks but you can mail order a Winchester rifle out of the Sears Catalog. *I actually heard an NPR reporter say that Cruz "bought his AK-15 legally" and I almost spat coffee all over the dashboard.

@864,531 (B)In Texas (probably other states too) pre-1900 firearms are considered antiques and not subject to a lot of gun laws (like background checks). It's a nice clean number and is just before all the controversial gun stuff like semi-automatics and submachine guns. Also I think the 1900s firearms look polite and sophisticated. Not ugly and scary. I think six shots is good for self defense. If everyone else is also carrying a Colt Peacemaker a mass shooting will be over pretty quickly.

Muskets are too inaccurate and unreliable. In a self defense situation you might hit the wrong person. Or what if you're being home invaded and it doesn't go off because the powder got damp because it's been raining a lot lately and the humidity is up.

Yes, but you have to do it properly. You can't just pull a gun on someone and challenge them. You have follow the duelling code and set up a time and do it in a secluded location. Maybe register duels so two people can agree to duel and apply for a permit and get legal permission to try to kill each other in an organized duel. Of course both parties would have to consent - if one doesn't then it's treated as any other murder. But if they do consent to the duel and do it properly, the winner won't face prosecution.

Can we dual with swords? I feel like I'd be the hipster who would want rapiers at dawn.

I don't know. Put a bayonet on that thing and shove it in someone's face so they know that if the powder doesn't go off you're going to gore them repeatedly or beat them with the stock. I think that's a pretty aggressive home defense strategy.

I'm wary of this. With modern medical care there would be too many people surviving duæls with rapiers. You could duæl to the death but what if the winner gets all squeamish about the blood and screaming and decides to stop, leaving the loser mangled and resentful and bearing a grudge the rest of his life?

I think that's a feature. It's really hard not to get maimed in an honest sword fight whether you're the winner or the loser. (duæls, presumably, being fair and honest sword fights) I feel like it would act as a deterrent to serious duæling.
