Rude. I assume the immune system gets compromised by the flu and then an opportunistic infection like pneumonia or something comes along and kills them when they're weak kind of like AIDS.

Probably for the same reason we say the people who die in car accidents died in car accidents rather than from trauma induced organ failure or blood loss or whatever.
