Do you consider it rude to belch at the dinner table?

LargeFatherDarius !Q3nn6KgaNA joined in and replied with this 8 years ago, 5 minutes later[^] [v] #861,533

It depends on the culture. In the US, it is very rude. In China, it is a sign that you are enjoying yourself and eating well.

Would it be rude not to belch if you were dining in China?

No. But you should show that you enjoy the food somehow.

I would stand up and do an Irish Jig in celebration of the good food.

They would think you foolish. You could slurp, say that you are so full, etc. You do not necessarily want a direct statement like, “Thank you! That was so good!” That implies distance and formality. You should say something indirect, like, “I am so full! I feel like I can never eat again!” It means you like it so much that you ate too much.

As you would know, the biggest show of respect is clink glasses in a "cheers" move but lower your glass to below theirs

That is a show of respect to the other diners, yes. In terms of the host or the cook (at someone’s house), slurping and eating waay too much is a huge compliment. Did you get forced to do rounds of baijiu at banquets? Brutal, eh?

Oh god yes. You think it's just a small shot of beer but it all adds up and don't get me started on Chinese wine.. bloody hell

Isn't "bottoms up" Jom-bay or something like that

I guess I could over eat. Then go into the bathroom and stink the place up, walk out pat my belly and belch fire and then do an Irish Jig :-)

The baijiu, the sorghum liquor, yes. It is brutal. And the Chinese have their tricks to gret the foreign guest smashed while they stay relatively OK. I learned their tricks and sometimes turned it around on them lol

Eat food. If you go out drinking in China it's almost always done while eating. Very few bars.

There are actually lots of bars. You may not have seen them because they tend to cluster in districts. Chinese bars are very different than Western. You go to a Chinese bar with a group, never alone. One person buys rounds, and you take shots together. No individual sipping like in Western bars.

LargeFatherDarius !Q3nn6KgaNA double-posted this 8 years ago, 1 minute later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #861,573

The trick to upping the Chinese in their “get the foreigner wasted” game is to start making toasts to the Chiense group leader, the one in the highest authority. This is usually an older man, who does NOT like getting drunk, because he has had to endure it for so many years. Keep making honorable toasts to him, until he starts getting queezy. He will then stop making toasts, and his underlings will read the situation and also stop.

I guess it depends on the city. Shanghai will have a few but even cities like Chong Ching, Yi Chun, Wu Han doesn't have that many, like 2 or 3 on one area.

I must respectfully disagree. Every Chinese city has many bars, because they are one of the venues that businessmen use to secure deals. You may just not have seen them.

Well what can I say? These were the cities we travelled to and with us were people who had being coming back every year with a new show for a decade. We kept getting told that the Chinese didn't have much bar culture except with the young. Business men go to restaurants and get a private room to do deals.

Is it true that in some parts of the middle east, you are supposed to vomit all over the table, proving that the meal was so good you'd like to eat it all over again?

LargeFatherDarius !Q3nn6KgaNA replied with this 8 years ago, 4 minutes later, 3 hours after the original post[^] [v] #861,618

Yes, then you must re-eat it.

@previous (G)
Never. They'll insist on giving you your change. They'll even run down the street after you to give it back.
