How does this affect the value of your flat?

It doesn't because this is Layton and I live in another area.

Freehold houses in London are really expensive but my lease hold is over 120 years so that's just as good.

Are they allowed to just do that? Isn’t that lot someone’s private property?

Also, the politically correct term is now “Roma”. Thanks.

Incorrect. Roma are a race of people descended from India who settled in eastern Europe. These are travellers or gypsies native to he British Isles and have a mix of Anglo and Irish heritage.

To answer your question though.. they can't legally do this and it is private property but which has public access so they need to be evicted by the courts. I'm not totally sure how it works but they'll most likely get asked to move on by asda (Wal-Mart) to try and avoid any nasty business in the media then they'll move on once given court orders.

I guess it depends on how much trouble they cause. If they start dumping buckets of piss and shit everywhere they'll get kicked off soonish but what normally happens is they do a deal with the land owners who agree to let them stay for a few weeks or months providing they stay clean, trouble free and actually move on when they say.

Yeah, but don’t they still call themselves Roma?

Roma people do but you very rarely see them in the UK. They tend to get deported or locked up fairly quickly. These folks are travellers. Very different set of people.

Yes. They are actually a very proud people with very distinct culture dispite being native to the British Isles, for example most, like 90% all get married at 16.

They are also big into boxing and it's known they'll travel up and down the country in their large tribes just to arrange a fight with another group somewhere. Horse racing is also huge and they sometimes race horse and cart on the roads when they think the police are not around.

To be honest I don't really know. I think every country has some sort of traveling people but for some reason the UK gets a quite distinct lot.

As far as I know, and I could be wrong, the only travelers in the US are hobos and punks.

Well I guess the US developed very differently. How do your traveling carnivals operate? The the UK all carnivals are ran by travellers, these travellers are slightly different as they have to stay within the law to get their licences so they don't squat land or shit up the place.

If you're genuinely interested you should look up some YouTube documentaries on UK travellers. They really are unique not just from a cultural point but also a comedy point.

Lol, you don't own your flat! You only lease it! That's not just as good, you don't own it!

Svet !jzYkdX7lIw (OP) replied with this 8 years ago, 4 minutes later, 8 hours after the original post[^] [v] #861,581

@previous (G)
It's the land it's built on that you can't own for obvious reasons as other are living on the same land. In the UK, if you purchase an apartment you purchase the lease that is normally from 100 to 500 years then you pay a yearly ground rent for someone to do maintenance on the building and gardens. You can do what you like with the lease from selling it or renting it out
