I'm glad to hear it.
On the IUD, my understanding is that the reason for putting it in while on a period is that doctors believe it's easier/less painful to put in then -- but it's not actually necessary. This info is several years old, but I remember that there might be studies that the timing doesn't matter in terms of ease of insertion, likelihood of expulsion, etc.? Have you asked if they could put it on another time (earlier)? Or you could just tell them you're on your period and they would likely go ahead with it.
I'd also recommend getting some muscle relaxants (from the doctor) and maybe pot brownies (probably not from the doctor) for when you do it...

yep, i mentioned that because that's what the nurse at the clinic said but you're right that it's established policy&practice rather than rules/law
