When I first learned of it (grade school, can't remember which grade exactly) I knew what the Holocaust was but not what the word Holocaust meant. If the teacher and/or textbook explained it originally meant
the name would have made more sense.
I ran into the same thing with the "underground railroad". 6 year old me was puzzled. It was an underground railroad, but it wasn't a railroad or underground. Why would you call something by a name which has nothing to do with the thing itself?!
I'm not sure if this means I was born to do '90s observational comedy (And what's the deal with the Underground Railroad? It's not a railroad, and it's not underground!) or if I'm on the autism spectrum. Sadly I was born 20 years too late for the former.
Holokautein (ὁλοκαυτεῖν) is one of the two chief verbs of Greek sacrifice, in which the victim is utterly destroyed and burnt up,
the name would have made more sense.
