Statistics are one aspect of many things to base, or not base, your decision on.Many people do things even though the statistics say they rather shouldn't. It's much more fun that way.

Statistics are a tool for capturing a snapshot of a certain aspect of reality.

That's a really good analogy. Most statistics are run to highlight a certain feature of the numbers at hand; they might show off a certain trend or aspect of the data, but they are by no means the whole story behind it -- much like fat girls on the Internet taking "angle" shots.
