Remember when those two 10 year olds killed that 4 year old in England and they got put into juvenile psychiatric care? One got out and lived a normal law abiding life. The other has been busted twice for child porn posession and has had to have been given multiple new identities because he keeps getting drunk and announcing who he really is.

Yeah, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables. That was one of the saddest things I ever heard of. As you said, Thompson went on to live a peaceful life, but Venables has been in almost constant trouble with the law since 2002. He's back in prison now, and was actually charged with a new set of offenses less than three weeks ago. I'm genuinely surprised he hasn't been murdered by his fellow inmates; I suppose the prison authorities are going to great lengths to keep his true identity secret.

Venables was a bad seed from the very start; it was virtually inevitable that he'd commit a murder at some point. Thompson wasn't terribly bright and (from what I've read) was led along by Venable's stronger psychotic personality. If they'd never met, Thompson probably would never have gotten into any serious trouble.

No, I think there was something wrong with him from a very early age. According to most of the articles I've read about him, Venables had a history of physical violence. There were stories about him torturing animals and making vicious attacks on other children, which should have set off alarms bells had anyone been watching.
From what I've read, some of the abuse took place post-mortem, although it's never been confirmed one way or another. Apparently the boys tried to stage the scene, making it look like James was murdered by an adult. If that was Venable's idea, it gives a strong impression of just how evil and calculating he truly was.
