Health 101:
Humans are able to fluctuate their biochemistry/hormones in response to odors or other hormones. ie: You smell food, your stomach growls and you feel hungry.
When several females live in close proximity to each other - related or nonrelated - they will begin synching their menstrual cycles in response to chemical triggers - the presence of hormones - and possibly nonchemical triggers as well, such as the knowledge that one is menstruating. One theory is that this is because within a tribe, it is advantageous for everyone to synch up their prime reproductive cycle so that the alpha male could impregnate the most females in one sitting (this dates very, very far back, farther than bipedalism).
One of us should feel ashamed that I know more about this than you do.

Hah. Mindblast said it. ;)
It's weird though. The only friend whom I spend every day with (literally) has delayed periods or periods after me.
