Yeah these laws were implement way back in the 40s/50s over concerns that people would fuck up pumping gas and set the whole station on fire. Obviously now we know people can do it, but old laws tend to stick around a bit, especially if they create artificial jobs.

I'm actually surprised full service gas stations haven't come back as a luxury thing. You pay more but you don't have to step out of your Lexus and touch gas pumps that poor people touch.

In Oregon and New Jersey it is illegal to pump your own gas.

Some states have weird laws where you cannot pump your own gas. New York is one. In Louisiana, we can pump our own gas.

It's been tried a few times IIRC and failed pretty quickly. There just wasn't enough demand to make it worthwhile. Younger generations prefer doing it themselves quickly and not having to talk to anyone. Older generations liked the idea on the face of it but didn't like the extra cost of full service. It turns out they were happier saving a few cents and doing what they were used to doing anyway.
If you wonder how gas stations went through the switch from full service to self-serve, then watch grocery stores which are going through a similar process now with self-check.

I remember a few years ago reading about a startup and their thing was they would come in a little fuel truck and fill up your car while you were at work so you didn't have to take time out of your busy executive day to do it. > Younger generations prefer doing it themselves quickly and not having to talk to anyone.
This x1000 I don't know why but I hate talking to employees while shopping. It's not that I'm snobbish - I'm definitely lower class and I worked various retail jobs before. It's just I want to be left alone.
I actually stopped going to a local grocery store (HEB) because they got rid of their self checkout (other, more distant, HEBs still have them so I'm not sure what the deal is).

you can find them around dallas, but there's not many. usually it's just a single pump marked "full" and it's usually at one that's a service station and also independently owned. you won't find them at the 7-11s or QTs around town. i think mostly it's exxons but i might be wrong, i don't actually use them.

I've been thinking about this and you can make an argument that, say, Starbucks coffee is better than McDonalds coffee and so people will pay more for it. Gasoline, on the other hand, is just gasoline. There's no "luxury" version.
However people still pay to upgrade to first/business class on planes even though they wont get to their destination any faster than the people in coach.

Actually, Chevron™ with Techron™ is superior, and it is all that I will use. Techron™ has been shown to clean and keep clean your fuel system better than anything else.

Oh come on now. Coach jams people together. Coach is filled with smelly people.
