What do you mean by 6 speed? My car is manual with 6 gears plus reverse. So 7 gears in total.

In American English, “6 speed” means what you said: 6 forward gears, plus one reverse gear.

You raise an interesting question! The Ford Model T was originally advertised as a 3 speed (two forward and one reverse speeds) but in today's nomenclature it would be a "2 speed". Why shouldn't reverse be counted as a speed? I know a car is in one of its forward gears 99.9% of the time but I still think reverse should be considered a "speed" for gear ratio counting purposes.

When I rent or borrow a car it is nearly always automatic.
