Becky, listen carefully please. For a direct quotation, the period goes inside the quptation marks, as such: He said, “McBecky eats McDonald’s only.”

But, if I am using quotation marks to emphasize a word (which technically I should not), using them in place of italics as it were, then the period does not go inside the marks, as such: Becky insisted that McDonald’s is “healthy”.

In other words, I am mocking the word healthy. In that case, the period goes outside.

Both AP and Chicago put periods and commas inside quotation marks for both quoted statements and list items, but I haven't checked the Miller Guide. In fairness, it's difficult to quickly browse past the Miller Guide's massive section on correct trademark symbol usage to get to the good stuff.

Sorry Becky, but I actually agree with Matt here. It is technically the convention that periods are put inside quotation marks if they encompass the last word of the sentence, but I think that's a shitty rule, and I never follow it. If the punctuation isn't part of the word or words I'm quoting, it doesn't make any sense why I should include it in there just because it is required AFTER the quote. If it's required AFTER the quote, then I will put it AFTER the quote, and if it is required IN the quote, then I will put it IN the quote.
