You might as well be using an Apple II from 1978. Thanks.

Why would I intentionally buy a Windows tablet?

Meta (OP) replied with this 8 years ago, 6 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #846,564

@previous (C)
Because you want the convenience and form factor of a tablet, but the power of a desktop OS.

Also because you need a new tablet and how bad can it be for $62?

> how bad can it be for $62?

If you bump it down to $50 and throw in a bottle of gin, then I might consider it. Getting drunk and trying to install a real OS on it sounds like a fun evening.

It just feels weird using Windows - the real version of Windows - on an 8" tablet.

I'm really not sure what Microsoft was thinking. It's touch-oriented enough to be annoying to desktop users, and mouse and keyboard oriented enough to be annoying to touch users.

Take typing for example. My Android devices "know" when I need the keyboard and bring it up instantly when I tap on something which needs text to be entered. When I'm done entering text the keyboard is dismissed again. Windows 10 doesn't. You can really tell Android was built around touchscreen input from the ground up. With Windows it's more like "well okay we'll let you use the on screen keyboard if you insist but wouldn't you rather connect a real keyboard and mouse with Bluetooth?"

I've given thought to installing Ubuntu on it. I'm just worried some off brand component (like the Wifi or touchscreen) will be missing a driver or some shit. It was hard enough to get WiFi working on name brand laptops with Ubuntu ten years ago. On a Chinese generic brand tablet? I'll need a big bottle of gin.

WiFi has actually got a lot better for distros like Ubuntu. Gone are exciting days of compiling some fork of some fork of WiFi drivers you found maintained by some guy on a German message board to get linux to see your off-brand WiFi card. I had a cheapy laptop that I was turning into a dual boot device, and Ubuntu had zero problems detecting and working with the hardware. The punchline is, of course, is that I had to use the Ubuntu side to go manually download all the Windows drivers to get the clean Windows install to work properly. And, yes, that part required drinking.

I know but I still have flashbacks to the bad old days. I never did get Linux Mint to work with the SiS graphics on my parents Lenovo Q100. I think it ended up running at 1280x800 on a 1440x900 monitor because I couldn't get it to recognize the graphics card. At least they didn't suffer from "strange popups" anymore like they did when it was on Windows XP.

I'm having some trouble getting Windows to update. It's choking on some 8GB update or something.

Doesn't that just have a 32GB SSD?? Why the actual fuck would you have a 8GB update for a tablet OS?

Yes!
> Why the actual fuck would you have a 8GB update for a tablet OS?
Because 8GB is more tinyer than 32GB. Also why would you not want to put a full desktop OS on a very cheap tablet?

Well, I'm glad it all worked out. Enjoy your Windows experience.

It does sound like you got a really good price for the hardware though.

I did attempt to stream from my Xbox One to the tablet but it was not a very pleasant experience even at the low quality streaming setting. The device simply does not have the memory or graphics power to handle it for high end games. It is possible that less graphically intense games would work ok but ultimately, in my opinion, that is not what this tablet is truly intended for. I was able to get a wired Xbox 360 controller working with the tablet though for Windows 10 based casual games by using a Micro-USB to USB dongle.

Android and iOS are dumbed down toy OSes for children who just want to play games. Windows 10 64 bit is a serious operating system for professionals.

I was unaware Win 10 ran on anything in the $60-$85 price range. Exception of course is home building win 10 on raspberry pi which is a stripped down version.
Me thinks you have Win 10 home cause that $6 Intel CPU which can do 64bit does not appear on specs for your tablet.

Android puts one hella lots of $$$ in my wallet. Win 10 not not not so much. I am typing this reply with Win 10 64

Hummmmmm - Me thinks some Possible Artistic Expression was A-Foot because the Atom CPU can run 64 as in enabled - Betting your tablet AIN'T and only because the object of survival of Intel CPU to keep battery consumption DOWN means X32 - Intel remains in the fight of its existance to get ARM chips into production via recent acquisition for the fight of its future life with Qualcomm. These days it's all about Battery life cause devices are mostly portable. X32 and X64 just is great if you can plug it into the wall socket.

$6 was just a quick look at what web says the CPU costs on volume basis. I don't have a clue what the real cost is. For sure a Qualcomm $50 CPU ain't going to make it in a $58 product

Limitations are: battery 4-5 hours of active use, screen color is okay but not amazing, cameras are also okay but not great.

But again for $62 you're not expecting an iPad pro. For the price it's an amazing tablet.

I think it was discontinued a while back. I notice a lot of other sellers also selling it for $62. Mine was from "SAVING PLUS" and fulfilled by Amazon.
