Topic: Working out at home instead of the gym

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #7,003

Image went missingI'm thinking about buying a weight bench (pic related) and working out at home instead of going to the gym. Will I be able to get a good workout at home? Good idea or bad idea?

It's a good idea if you stick to the idea.

I wouldn't do it sporadically. I've been thinking about this for months. Just don't know if I can get decent results with basic equipment.

We all gotta start somewhere. Just see how far you get with what you can afford. Then, move on to more advanced equipment if you're not satisfied with the results. (Or join the gym)

As long as you know how to use it properly, yes. I decided against buying equipment for home since I go to the gym regularly enough to not need it.

Never said I was an expert. I'm just giving OP some suggestions. I bet you don't get out of the house much, do you?

Well, I don't do any free weight exercises at the gym (they made a crappy routine for me with weight machines and cardio), but it can't be very hard to learn.

Yeah, a lot of gyms offer crappy workouts. Just try to run a mile a day (or so) and make sure you're comfortable with the amount you're lifting. Don't try to lift too much thinking that you're helping your muscles. Instead, find a "comfort zone" with the weights and lift in intervals (I do three sets of 15 for almost everything). Only increase the weight if you feel you can handle it. If you hurt, stop. Also, stay away from those "miracle exercise" machines that promise amazing results and seem too good to be true, because of course they usually are, and can actually cause damage to your body. Make sure you eat a lot of foods with protein (like chicken, not fried obviously) and stay away from fast food altogether (because it's really bad for you; I know that's not saying much, but it's not worth eating a cheeseburger at McDonald's to something more healthy and real). Don't drink soda (or diet soda) -- instead, drink water because it doesn't have anything added to it and is better than Gatorade or any sport drink (smartwater is fine). Just a few tips to get you started. Good luck. :)

I don't recommend any machines if you're just trying to lose weight and get in shape. Pushups, pullups and crunches will get you both conditioned and stronger... and they're free! Add in some jogging and better eating habits and you're better off than purchasing any equipment.

I go to a gym only because I am doing a full body workout routine 4 days a week to gain weight. Lots of weights are required and I don't have room for various benches and cables and whatnot.

Get three pairs of dumbbells. A comfortable weight, a challenging weight, and a weight that you can barely lift/curl. Gradually work your way up in weight, but continue doing 3-4 sets of 10 reps. Only work each muscle once a week. Possibly twice if 72 hours have passed and you no longer feel sore.

I could barely do 2 pullups when I started a month ago. I can do 8 now. I also could only do 30 pushups. After bench pressing so much (and never doing pushups) I decided to give pushups another try... I was able to do 53 in one minute today. Just stick with it! The results are amazing!

Well I'm trying to gain muscle mainly. That's why I wondered if the weight bench pictured would be enough.
