Ethnicity is an overly broad term classing people according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background. It can be used to mean the same thing as 'race' or imply a more cultural context. There don't seem to be any hard and fast rules for its use.
Over a large area, a single race descriptor may include any number of ethnic groups, and people may belong to more than one group classed as an ethnicity. For example, Native-Americans may be described as a single race, but they may hail from many different tribal groups. European settlers to the same continent came from a wide variety of ethnic groups as well, but are generally classed as single race. The same is true of Europe, Asia, the middle-east, or just about anywhere you care to look.
