I worked with a deaf person. I always assume people that don't speak back to me are deaf. Turned out this person wasn't being an asshole. They were just actually deaf.

kind of. but it's probably that it's easier to tell when someone can't hear anything at all if they're in a very loud place like a fair looking like they can't hear anything at all

After knowing that they're deaf, they somehow look deaf but beforehand, I'd have no idea.
