It's always puzzled me how some professions are considered "heroic" but others are not. We honor police and military, but what about the coal miners who put their life on the line every day so we can keep the lights on? The farmers who put their life on the line every day so we can eat dinner? The forestry workers who put their life on the line so we can build a house?

I think it has something to do with the directness of the risk. Like, yeah coal mining sucks and you will likely get diseases, and working in a factory can get your hand crushed but those are risks you take while doing your job. Cops, firefighters, soldiers, coast guard rescue etc. have risk taking as the primary element of their job. It's a little weird because that's not really true. Most cops most of the time are not chasing down armed criminals, most firefighters do not spend most of their day inside a raging inferno, most soldiers are not stationed in a hostile foreign country actively engaged in combat etc. The general perception I think is that when the shit hits the fan, these are the people running towards the danger whereas like a farmer for the most part has a constant level of risk that just is incidental to the actual duties they perform, and they aren't asked or expected to go above and beyond what any other schlub would do in a crisis.

What do all of those professions have in common? They eat a lot of Chili. The chili farts propel them towards the danger.
