Topic: How come you hardly see any cartoons with more serious plots and more darker tones?

Most of what is available today is more colorful and comedic. I think the ending of The Legend of Korra might have signified the end of an era. It was an end of the more darker and more serious works of animation. Now it seems like we're in another era of Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse cartoons. Which seems odd considering how superheroes dominates the cinemas with the company known for the darker more serious films being called shit by those who like the more cheerful, colorful, and unrealistic one.
If this corresponds to the current state of society then it shouldn't since it seems like nihilism is running rampant right now. Rick & Morty strikes a blend of more dark and serious yet comedic animation, but it's just a comedic cartoon. When is the next great serious cartoon going to come?

Sometimes I think that cartoons are telling me things. For example, when I was younger I can remember watching Dragon ball GT, and one day Vegeta spoke to me through the glass.

I often think I am living a parallel life with a person growing up in the 1980's. I experience a deep longing and fondness for those times which don't really correlate with the memories from my current temporal zone, as if I was born in that year.

There is no clear cut delineation of decades. They all bleed into each other... The 80s didnt just stop and go away when January 1st 1990 arrived.
