I know nothing! I'm very jelly of people who can trace back their family origins hundreds of years. :(

I know that my Grandad was Irish, my Dad's side of the family has some Norwegian in it, and that my surname is German, but that's about it.

I had/have little interest. However my brother and his wife do. So they do the http://www.ancestry.com
That is a subscription site. However lots and lots of Libraries subscribe and every major university in USA has a subscription, so that would be a place to start. The Mormon church does the same thing and you can use theirs. They do this because after "they" the Mormons that is, research their family all the way back to Adam and Eve, they do some kind of hokey pokie and convert everyone to Mormons.
I am 1/2 Russian and 1/2 Hungarian nor have I looked beyond the 3rd gen going backwards from info my family sent me. No need to have the Adam and Even incest information on my desktop.

I can track my ancestry back to 1848, when German immigrants fled to America because of the failed revolution in Germany. They called them "48'ers" because so many came over that year. Pretty much all my lineage is German.

Umm well my parents are from the united states, my Dad's parents are both from France. My mom's mom is from the United States, and my Mom's Dad is from Hungry. My Great Grandfather on my Dad's side is from France, my Great Grandmother on my Dad's side is from Germany (I think). My ancestors fought against the invading white man after their horde first came to my lands over 500 years ago.
