Considering 800 million Muslims out of 1.4 billion are illiterate. That means they cannot even read the Koran. Most grow up playing follow the leader. If the leader is some crazy asshole then you have what you have currently.

Not that reading the Koran is necessarily a good thing because you grow up thinking the Earth is Flat

That's the exact opposite as I'm saying. Yeah, some atheists are violent but I wouldn't say most. I live in the bible belt and these Christians are way more insane. One day they're normal, going to church every day, preaching, next thing ya know, they murdered their family.
