if i have a password on my macbook but the computer dies and i hook up the 2.5" sata to a USB thing to my PC, can i freely browse and copy the files without worrying about he the password?

BackTrack 4 shouldn't have a problem mounting the filesystem. (I'm not sure about Backtrack 3) Any recent Ubuntu liveCD should let you do it as well.

I'm more experienced with windows, but if you encrypted it there's still a few applications online which should be able to crack it for you. The most ones I know best tend to run during the boot after being written to a USB drive and either delete the password or change it to a user-specified one.

If you hook the other hard disc to a mac computer, even if you do not boot it up you may need a password to get in.
Edit: PC, you should be fine.
