that's all i'll get to explore until saturday evening. but so far i've gotten to see a bunch of new shit in just the 20 minutes i played. it's gotten a very major addition here. my favorite part was flying through the atmosphere, it reacted almost like it had lift and drag yanking it around, definitely not the same as flying in space, but probably needs some work. i kinda crashed once and had to blow the canopy and eject.
submitted a g-sync related bug. gotta turn that off for now, and run under 144hz or you get CTD.

if you think i only have a hundred million you're misinformed.
back to daymar, this time in a gladius. going to see how it handles flying in the atmosphere and check out one of the mining outposts. Daymar is a moon but it does have a very thin atmosphere at very low pressure. at this point we are an unknown altitude above the target body. unfortunately they aren't planning on modeling orbital mechanics, ala kerbal space program, which is probably for the best. to enter the atmosphere you must accelerate towards the planet. in practice it works just fine, it just uses a bunch of fuel. if you enter too steely then it's much harder to control and it's not impossible to crash.

this basically proves one thing, all speeds are relative to probably a fixed background. the cruise speed of the ship is 1200mps, but enters the atmosphere at a speed almost 10 times that. so you'll have speeds displayed to you differently when relative to the ground of a planet/moon or relative to the orbital zone around a planet. so that means even if you speed in orbit is displayed as 0, you'll still be carrying velocity in the form of fake orbital momentum. you'll probably also gain another huge lump of fake orbital momentum when you change your position relative to a planet or its host star. so you may have a top speed of 1200mps, but it'll really be more like 1200mps, 11,200 mps, and 101,200mps with a +- 1200mps as being up to pilot discretion.

cruising along at 6700m at 650 or so mps. there's a bit of turbulence, and you can't do much turning because the afterburners are being used to help maintain speed and turning reduces forward momentum. this is all being flown in comstab mode (fake airplane mode with heavy flight computer assist) to see how it differs in atmosphere. you get buffeted around a bit, it feels a bit like flying at close to stall speed. probably because the ship doesn't "fly" so much as it uses thrusters to hover. ships are a lot more like quadcopter drones than airplanes. it's an odd way to fly, but you get used to it. here i'm trying to close a lot of distance to the mining outpost.
squeegee (OP) quadruple-posted this 8 years ago, 4 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^][v]#835,106
at lower altitudes your top speeds reduce dramatically, and trying to fly faster than safe speeds makes control very difficult. very turbulent. reducing speed makes things go much better, so i imagine dogfights in atmosphere are going to be very different from space fights. still not airplane dogfights, it'll be spaceship dogfights, but flying quickly will make it hard for people to pursue, so still there may be room for airplane tactics in this game somewhere.

the mining outpost looks like a site survey or something, no mining equipment. appears abandoned or at least unoccupied.

i wasn't planning on killing him. at first i just wanted to make sure he didn't fuck with my shit. but dude made a b-line for my ship and i forgot to lock it up. so i fired a couple of warning shots, i didn't hit him, just shot the ground at his feet. i backed up and waved him off of my ship, and that fucker pulled his rifle and at me. so i shot him a couple of times and we both get behind cover. he ended up coming out, probably thought his rifle would beat my pistol, but probably didn't have a good enough connection to beat mine. after shooting him in the head a few times he finally died and i gained a crime stat level. next thing i know i'm being shot at by a 3rd player from their ship, idk when they got there but they tried to light me up with cannon fire. i had already made it to my ship and was powering on the engines.
he tried to pursue for a few km, but i lost him, probably due to turbulence and high speed maneuvers. after he broke pursuit, i headed for orbit too look for a new spot to explore.

okay, so the instrument cluster is all kinds of glitchy and fucky, so there's no artificial horizon or anything to assist flying blind. i can just barely make out a horizon though
