my rogue is surprisingly far along now, i'm sure some catch up mechanics are in effect, in fact i know it. some major gating stuff is now just trivialized or entirely gone. so it's been super fast getting to this point. i managed to entirely skip like a year long grind. pretty pleased about that, and the story line just keeps going and going, which is nice.
i guess i have hit one gate, my rogue has to complete 40 heroic dungeons and that'll take a while at the rate i'm doing those. but, she's already raiding now. since gear is flowing so freely there's been no problem getting equipped for raids. she's far from optimized, but her item level has opened up all but the last raid on the list. so far she's completed 2 of the 4 available.
edit: oh, and all the dungeons have been run at least once for their quest to advance the story

at this point the early raids are trivial, my rogue way, way outgears all but the most current. the fights aren't technically challenging when you down the bosses so quickly. just avoid the obvious stupid ways to die and these fights are a tank'n'spank.
the first raid was some kinda druid themed thing in the emerald dream that involved Malfurion and Taranda (ugh) and so i kinda zoned out through most of it.
i think what happened was a few expansions ago the main boss, Illidan Stormrage, was killed and it turns out he's actually kinda important so the druids go hunting for his lost spirit, and they find it in the Emerald dream being tormented by this guy and so we, like, gotta go rescue this demon/elf arcane mage that looks like the literal devil and rescue his soul. that we killed years ago. and then resurrect him.
i think that's what was going on

i'm not really sure about this one, but it had to do with the Vyrkuls, they're like haunted vikings or something. so i think what happened is that the Alliance needed an artifact from the Vyrkuls, a shield i think, and they ended up tricking Helya, the god of the underworld, to get the shield from her. and so then she i guess kidnapped odyn? i'm not really sure, but my rogue had to fight odyn and then Helya and then it was all good with the Vyrkuls.
short little raid, tbh. 3 bosses. gap filler raid. didn't advance the story much tbh

next up is Gul'dan, he's been killed in previous expansions too, and this one is from another dimension parallel universe kinda thing. it's best to just not think too hard about that and just accept the fact that gul'dan must again be killed. he's a power hungry maniac that has been trying to get inside the Tomb of Sargeras since warcraft 3. he thinks he can gain the power of a titan and i guess take over the universe. he's like the whole reason the burning legion is even back on azeroth, he excaped from the Draenor expansion (parallel universe) and immediately invaded the tomb of Sargeras.
and at this point i think Azeroth isn't really hidden anymore and the Legion can just come and go as they please. they have space ships and, i guess teleport planets around... i'm still not sure how there's a new planet in the skybox.

this is like the real boss though, Kil'jaden, he's the leader of the burning legion and answers only to Sargeras himself. he's an Eredor, a race from the planet argus that was destroyed by the legion's fel magic and corrupted the eredor into a subservient race. Sargeras wanted them because they were a very powerful race that would make a perfect army. (the refugees that escaped the destruction of argus eventually became known as the Draenei, a playable alliance race) kil'jaden was the eredor leader, and after Sargeras corrupted him and empowered him with fel magic the burning legion swept across the universe destroying whole planets and civilizations for eons under his command.
there's another boss after that, i think Kil'jaden was trying to have Gul'dan create a super weapon, and that needs to be destroyed too
those are the released raids, there's another one but idk what it's about. seems like once Kil'jadens super weapon is destroyed that should be the end of things.
