It is common for writers in news, education, and so on to try be so understandable to the general public that the get facts technically exactly incorrect, perhaps the worst kind of incorrect. Most people probably don't know what the fuck a "base attack" would be, and it takes so many words to explain that people would still not understand, so the writers just say, fuck it let's call it an acid attack
