very many people are stupid, and in this modern age of opinionated information people lose sight of what benefits them, because they are convinced nothing can benefit them or ever will. which means everything, in their minds, is out to benefit someone else over them exclusively. and with constant reinforcement of those ideas through media echo-chambers we end up with people voting for a party openly hostile to their own constituents and a growing corporate sponsorship of government which feeds back into the whole thing by taking advantage of average people.
