There are 39 separate buildings that comprise the Qualcomm campus in San Diego and many others elsewhere.
More Samsung phones than Apple and Drones are using one mass amount of Qualcomm CPU's but yea Apple is angry re paying for patents it does not own.
The more exciting NOT is the news today that Broadcom is moving back to USA and Trump is touting fake news cause only the small Singapore operation that acquired Broadcom is moving to USA - Most has always been here from GetGo including those who sued Qualcomm back a bit
Broadcom of note makes the CPU for Raspberry Pi and is also the company that gave Apple major fits recently re chip that could be hacked by a 6 year old as many did

No one forces any company to use the patents. They can design stuff without them.
@828,056 (E)
Intel tried n tried to make the Atom do what Qualcomm does and failed so they bought a company that pays the Brits for the rites to use ARM technology
No question Apple is trying to find a way to get out cheap as any company should but no matter what happens Apple ends up stuck on patents from Qualcomm like the no connect charging and other patents it long ago tried to find a work a round -

they are charging a percentage of the price of the full unit, the vast majority of which they had nothing to do with.

Until recently I was under orders by US Gov to say nada about the situation - But the bottom line which business is always about - Apple cannot stop using Qualcomm. TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE - Which is one crying complaint Apple has about Q. AND it gets even more much more worse for Apple when 5G hits full speed.
The real crying Apple has is over the Patents to make 4GLTE possible which is worth 7X more in cash than the chips. Any company that uses 4GLTE is stuck paying Q for the necessary patents to make it work. Companies could of course revert to CDMA but of course that is fully Qualcomm patents
> they are charging a percentage of the price of the full unit
My wallet is most pleased about such arrangement

What makes 4GLTE works is all about the Patent holder "Q" for the majority of the mandated 4GLTE Standard
And again the patents are worth far more by 6X in Billions than the Chips - Many "Q" Investors argue that the company should split off Chips and Patents cause well $$$$

yeah. 4g lte is a miniscule part of a smartphone. why does qualcomm feel they deserve to be paid for work they did not do or own any rights to?

@previous (E) > 4g lte is a miniscule part of a smartphone
LOL Really? I suppose you have no need for Texting - Video - Phone -
> feel they deserve to be paid for work they did not do or own any rights to?
Why on Planet Earth did Apple and others agree to sign the contracts4? Perhaps the Attorneys needed to take my Reading English 101 course.
Anonymous E replied with this 8 years ago, 5 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^][v]#828,339
i didnt say it was an unnecessary part, but its a small part. let's say qualcomm is responsible for 3% of an iphone, they are basing their price on the work the other 97%
also, they signed it because qualcomm forced them.
Syntax replied with this 8 years ago, 13 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^][v]#828,342

CPU and Modem 3%?
Your math is a bit fuzzy.
> they signed it because qualcomm forced them.
Not once have I attended one of those contract meetings. So you are saying guns were at Steve Jobs head back at the GetGo or a Knife LOL
Fact is Apple keeps Attorney's very very busy in many a law suit and such is life in business. What I like is that Samsung still sells more phones than Apple - One should stay tuned re 5G and the Future cause the Beta tests are not only 95% complete there are systems in many a place on Planet Earth running 5G currently and Damn just DAMN

They're free to use non-Qualcomm technology just like the Chinese made their own 4g network to get around Q patents.

Recent Developments Revenues in China, for the third quarter of fiscal 2017 were $5.4 billion, a We shipped approximately 187 million Mobile Station Modem (MSM) integrated circuits for CDMA- and OFDMA-based wireless devices, a decrease of 7% compared to approximately 201 million MSM integrated circuits in the year ago quarter. Despite the decline in MSM shipments, QCT's revenues increased compared to the year ago quarter
primarily due to an increase in revenues related to radio frequency front end (RFFE) products, primarily from our recently formed RF360 Holdings joint venture, and connectivity shipments.
Worldwide 3G/4G connections (CDMA-based, OFDMA-based and CDMA/OFDMA multimode) grew sequentially by approximately 3% to approximately 4.5 billion, which was approximately 59% of total cellular connections
The one Chinese company that does not pay still uses GSM and has a very small share of China's market.
