Actually it comes from the DREAM Act (acronym for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act), legislation which would have prevented deportations of illegal immigrants under 18. Those who would benefit under the act were called "DREAMers".

Kind of ironic because I'm usually the least informed on political issues.
I just hate these contrived acronyms. DACA is fantastic. Deferred action for childhood arrivals. Easy to remember, does what it says on the tin. Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act. Seriously? I think even in 2001 people had stopped calling them "aliens".

It's doubly confusing because the DREAM Act was never actually enacted. But President Obama created DACA which is pretty much the same thing. So DREAMers should really be called DACAers.
