How come primitive societies have them, then?

Because they were primitive. The more a society advances the more they naturally outgrow such gender roles. Marketers are afraid of change so they continue to maintain the status quo through advertisements. The media is also responsible for creating the gender roles. Who do you think created the gender role of makeup being only for girls? They never had makeup in caveman days.
