Whenever I try to make a selection with a path, it always selects the outside of the area instead of the inside. This also means that I cannot simply right click and 'fill area' since it will fill everywhere except the area I want filled in, lol. Instead, I must right click, make selection and select inverseand then fill in the area with the brush or bucket. See image for example.How can I make it select inside the area by default instead of outside the area?

Use "invert selection". That's how it works in GIMP at least.

That's what I do, but it's annoying to have to do that every time I want to make a selection, and intolerable when all I want to do it fill in a path area.

It's not hard, but it's not supposed to do what it is doing and I want it to stop. I don't want to have to select and inverse every single time. I don't want to have to piss about when all I wasnt to do is fill a path area. Did you even read the post before slapping your hands on your keyboard to make your reply? Obviously not:

The only way to have invert as default (I believe) is to write a script. Good luck. ;)

Aha! Then just reset your preferences. Google it, I can't remember the exact steps, you press something on startup I think.
If Photoshop is already open on your screen, close out of it. Then hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and start Photoshop back up.
