People generate Bitcoins by processing transactions, that is by verifying that Bitcoins changed hands.
Once you mine/buy/trade and get Bitcoins you can exchange them by saying "I give Bitcoins #102394 to SOMEGUYS PUBLIC KEY", and sign it with your private key. Everyone logs it, and it's now known that he owns those bitcoins.
