Star Trek wasn't really his kind of place. It would be interesting to see what he could do with a spinoff series that he had more control over, but rebooting TOS to look like Starship Troopers wasn't really where he fit.

@previous (B) Star Trek Beyond was a pretty fun movie and even the 2009 movie was still good from an action perspective. Into Darkness was pure shit.

they kinda lost me when they said "fucking." there's also been a surprising amount of gore. i don't have a problem with those things in tv shows, but they don't really fit in star trek very well. it's still a decent sci-fi series, sure looks nice, but it's not really star trek. and this whole mushroom drive stupidity is the worst kind of retcon. afaik star trek has never had any kind of battlestar galactica style jump drive, even the experimental drives they showed in previous series were all variations on warp technology. even the borg use warp technology. in TNG they had a super experimental hyper warp drive technology that used "thought" to accelerate the drive - or some shit - but it wasn't instantaneous, it was simply super fast warp tech.
so i'm guessing the discovery and it's harmful-to-life mushroom drive will be classified and destroyed in the last episode so no one will know about it in the future. probably a huge space battle where destroying the ship will be the only way to end the war and save everyone's lives. and this time the captain will go down with the ship.
probably just saved everyone 5 seasons.
idk why if they were planning a prequel didn't they go back to an earlier period like they did, but instead of adding new magical technology maybe make conflict with the fact that the federation at the time was very small and very underpowered compared to the klingons. the show Enterprise was almost excellent, but they really fucked up with the overall story arc and the individual episodes were pretty boring, tbh. i'm just kind of tired of crazy unnecessary technomagic. imo the spore drive arc is equivalent to the time traveling police or what the fuck ever Enterprise was trying to do. it's going to dominate the entire series and it'll end half-assed and 2 seasons early.
really wish these folks would quit with trying to remake and reinvent old IPs and instead make new IPs where all their interesting and crazy ideas can actually make sense.
the Orville is more star trek than this new star trek, tbh. it feels more trek like. probably because of the simpler and cheaper sets and cinematography, but the story too. but at least seth mcfarlain has created a new IP with a unique universe instead of taking an established series like star trek and just ham fisting adult content into it.

I don't think Abrams is involved with Discovery, but that's a pretty good take on it none the less. As much as I want hate the new Trek (and I really do) I am willing to give it time to settle in and find a rhythm. I still rewatch season one and two TNG, and I'm always amazed that it managed to come back for a third season. (Shades of Gray? Really?)
Yeah, the gore and the language really don't fit into Trek, and it feels like a cheap shot just to show that they aren't on network TV anymore. Maybe it'll settle down after a while. Yeah, the spore drive is essentially "magic" at this point, and it's going to be hard to believably retcon this kind of technology into a pre-TOS timeline. I'm hoping they will find writers who are able to rise above goofy callbacks and wanting the actors to say "fuck" in the dialogue. I think it has the potential to be a decent story with some complex characters.

the cussing and gore has a "this isn't your dad's star trek" kinda feel to it. they were probably, like you said, just making a statement and it won't become routine. the gore is probably here to stay, but i bet the lighten up on the cussing. and i hope you're right, that they find a rhythm and settle into a solid show, cause it does look great imo and i want to see more sci-fi in general, so i hope it's successful.

Nailed it.

damnit, polygon might've changed my mind about it. i was wondering what william shatner would think of saying fuck on star trek and polygon points out several instances of cussing, but fucking is definitely the furthest they've gone. they're just going where no star trek has gone before. they mention that nudity wouldn't have been prohibited either. maybe in the future we'll see some alien titties.

In some ways, the new show is tamer. While the word "fucking" came up, there's been no actual fucking that I remember in this new show, unlike the other shows, even the original. Early in TNG, Data and Yar fucked, later on Troy fucked some guy she just met and we saw them rub oil on each other. In Enterprise, the oriental translator fucked some guy she just met. Kirk was getting hot all the god damn time. It's all so needless since it's easy to get something better to jack off to these days, and besides it's practically seen as a show kids grow up with for decades now.
TNG had a really gory scene when the bug things were inside starfleet officers. Picard had to phaser a guys head and upper torso apart and it was full of gross bugs. Then there was the time that the kidnapper collector had Data and he shot his companion with a really painfully slow energy weapon.
