- The reason they’re doing this is to better address health issues experienced by gay people. These include certain STDs and social problems like isolation.
- Gay rights activists and organisations have praised the measure, saying it will help the NHS to better understand and treat gay patients.

This was actually brought in to make sure gay people aren't discriminated against. You know the best way to ensure gay people aren't discriminated against? Not asking them in the first place. If they don't know whether the patient is gay or straight, they can't discriminate. It's nobodies business.

Unless there is some sort of extreme homophobia permeating the NHS, this will not usher in a wave of homophobic discrimination. The NHS already logs similar patient data like race, religion, and sex, and I don’t think there have been any real consequences from that.
As I already noted, patient is under no obligation to answer either. If they want to keep it private then they can.
