It would be insane countersignaling to use one today. You would get way more attention than if you bought that new $1,000 iPhone. No one's gonna notice the new iPhone. It looks like all the other iPhones. This looks radically different than anything out there now.
Also hipsters tend to pick up stuff when it's at a coolness nadir. Like trucker hats, vinyl records, beards, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, plaid shirts, etc. There's nothing less cool now than a 20 year old cell phone. It makes perfect sense.
